GROUPSTAND FOR PEACE, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

BACKGROUND

Peace and Growth or Development have a positive relationship. The strides that the country has made over the years in its growth and development agenda are subject to the peace that the country enjoys. However, despite the historical resilience for the country architecture for peace there exist conflict and pockets of violence (UNDP- GPI 2021). The occasional eruption of violence in some pockets of the country is an indication that the national peace mist be continuously worked on to be preserved.

The national mechanisms are complemented by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) who have remained vibrant and have the space to play their role and engage in local development as well as advocacy (UNDP – GPI report, Ghana 2021). In spite of the tremendous efforts by the national architecture and other civil society groups and organizations, the National Peace is brought to the brink of collapse in every four years during general elections.

To consolidate the efforts made by the national architecture for peace such as the National Peace Council, additional efforts by groups like the GroupStand for peace growth and development are essential to safeguard our national peace which provides the bedrock for growth and development.

To foster growth and development to improve the quality of life of the ordinary Ghanaian, the protection and preservation of the national peace is a responsibility of all well-meaning Ghanaians. It is against this background that the Groupstand for Peace Growth and Development seeks to provide a general platform for all peace loving Ghanaians, both home and abroad, to contribute to cement our national peace.

The Groupstand for Peace Growth and Development therefore brings together members of the business community, political parties, traditional leadership, the clergy, the academia, labour unions and all other interested parties to bolster peace initiatives and support peaceful activities of similar groups and organizations.

ABOUT US

The GroupStand for Peace Growth and Development (GPGD) is a registered civil society group in Ghana founded in 2022. It is a platform for the mobilization of people from all backgrounds, both home and abroad, who believe in the principles of the founding charter of the United Nations and seek to secure the preservation of peace in Ghana.

Currently, the group is made up of seven hundred and eighteen (718) individuals spread across the sixteen regions of the country and abroad. Each member is a Peace Ambassador in his or her own community. Members adhere to the principles of peaceful resolution of matters involving them and other parties, where applicable members shall opt for alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

MISSION

To become the leading civil society group responsible for the promotion of Peace, Growth, and Development in Ghana.

VISION

Partner with other interested groups and organizations to maintain Peace in Ghana; Before, During and After every Election.

OBJECTIVES

  • Create an umbrella body for civil society groups, labour unions, opinion leaders, religious leaders and the business community to interact to promote peace and development in Ghana by March 2026.
  • Take active part in all activities aimed at maintaining peace in Ghana; before, during and after every General Election.
  • Train at least sixteen youth from various political parties in Ghana at the Kofi Annan International Peace training Centre by the end of November 2024 and ten every year.
  • Identify three youth leaders from three “hotspots” each in Ghana and train them at KAIPTC before the end of November, 2024 to serve as peace ambassadors.

EXPECTATIONS

Historically, a national threat to Ghana's National Peace has been the conduct of general elections. Though the country has gone through series of elections since the fourth Republic, there is always heightened tension and a real or perceived threat to our security. Sentiments by various political actors and their followers have always been a concern for peace lovers and partakers in our national peace architecture

Groupstand for Peace, Growth and Development therefore expects to build the next generation of Ghanaian voter and political activist;

  • Election is an expression of opinions through the ballot box.
  • Election is not a do or die affair.
  • Voting is peaceful and must be exercised as such.
  • Voters must shun actors who seek their votes through violence.
  • Election day is just like any ordinary day in the country.
  • Violence holds no future for the voter.
  • There is nothing good about violence except its prevention.
